Conversion Services
RoHS prohibits the use of six substances in your products. Not complying keeps them out of the EU and other countries. Our RoHS conversion services let you grow into these markets without the expense of maintaining parallel product designs, multiple BoMs and dual-manufacturing routings.
Restrictions of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations took effect within the EU in 2006. Other countries introduced similar rules around the same time. Under RoHS, electronics manufacturers are required to eliminate:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI)
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
Notice how RoHS electronics are more than just lead-free. Some manufacturers may tell you it's just about lead to RoHs, but that doesn't bring you into compliance. That's why it's important to work with a partner who understands the regulations and what conversion entails.
Implications for your Products
The banned materials, especially lead, were there for a reason. Mostly, they helped with achieving good solder joints as lead-free solders have different flow characteristics. Going leadfree requires some changes in design and manufacturing. Unless these are accounted for during the conversion process, there is a risk the RoHS alternative version will be less reliable. We can help you understand the implications for your product and ensure your customers see no difference between “before” and “after” conversion.
Conversion Benefits
Besides letting you sell into a host of new markets, there are some specific technical advantages to RoHS electronics. The different flow characteristics of lead-free solder mean components can be placed closer together on a board as the joints won't flow into one another. This means higher component density, which can translate into smaller boards or space for additional features.
RoHS conversion services for your business
Many electronics companies still offer legacy products that don’t comply with RoHS regulations. If you'd like to update these designs, perhaps to sell them in new markets, talk to Surya Electronics. We understand RoHS and the importance of going more than lead-free, and we'll handle the conversion for you.
We can advise and help with RoHS testing.
Services Offered
Surya Electronics can help in three ways: Your selection will depend on your level of RoHS expertise and availability of internal resources. We provide:
- Turnkey production. We handle everything from: procurement to production.
- Labor only. Perhaps you have preferred sources, or maybe you’re already purchasing components.
- Conversion. From through-hole to SMT or RoHS.
In this case, we offer a cost-effective solution — let us handle the assembly for you, using components that you issue. In addition, we can advise and use our X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer to help with RoHS testing.
Design Review
Professional engineers need boards quickly that perform optimally. Whether you specialize in medical, industrial or consumer devices, we know you don’t have time for errors. That’s why our human inspectors comb through your PCB design to find every little glitch BEFORE it grows into a big malfunction.
The goal is to produce a board formula that’s more reliable and much closer to market-ready.
Process
State-of-the-art printed circuit boards don’t just happen by chance. Don’t let our traditional red brick exterior fool you; we’re continually optimizing workflows and training for new technologies. When a Surya specialist navigates your bare board production process, expect your board to be manufactured
faster and perform better.
Cost Reduction
With over 30 years of experience, we know every avenue and can leverage our connections to attain the lowest possible pricing. With all that experience we can’t help but produce the most efficient, most cost-effective PCBAs at the lowest possible price.
Quality
We don’t like to brag, but numbers don’t lie: Surya Electronics has a 97% first-build success rate and and Surya is know for its accurate and on-time delivery. That’s guaranteed — because for Surya, quality doesn’t happen by accident, it’s built into our processes.
